Featured 7 Day Tour - The Northern Literary Trail
This tour takes us through some of the most historical literary locations in the UK and features the following locations:
Brontė Sisters (Haworth, Yorkshire)
Visiting the home of the famous Brontė sisters. The Brontės were the world's most famous literary family and the Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontė Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontė were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre (1847), Emily's Wuthering Heights (1847), and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today.
William Wordsworth (Grasmere, Cumbria)
We visit Dove Cottage which was home to the Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) and his family for 8½ years (1799-1808). Here Wordsworth wrote many of his most famous poems. There are many ideas associated with "Romantic" poetry, but one of the most important for Wordsworth was to show the link between human experience and the natural world. Wordsworth loved and drew inspiration from this landscape of the Lake District, his home. Today we hope that the importance of place has been retained: that interacting with Wordsworth's work, in the place it was created, allows the freshness of the original inspiration to live.
Robert Louis Stevenson (Edinburgh, Scotland)
We take a tour of The Stevenson House which was the childhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894), creator of Treasure Island, Kidnapped and Jekyll and Hyde, from the age of six until he finally left in 1880. Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh's New Town in 1850. He died forty-four years later on a small Samoan island in the Pacific. During his short life he travelled the world, defied convention, and made himself one of the most famous writers of the 19th century.
William Shakespeare (Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire)
We visit Shakespeare's home town of Stratford upon Avon where you will have a guided tour of his home - the half-timbered building in Henley Street as well as experience the heritage of the Royal Shakespeare Company, whose high standards of performance have been set by some of the greatest names from stage and film including Sir Lawrence Olivier, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Antony Sher and Kenneth Branagh. We will also catch one of the company's famous performances which run throughout the year in Stratford: a traditional market town with a wealth of places to visit in your free time here too.
